January-February 2013 Canada trip of Martin Jay Grumet

January 29, 2013 I flew from Boise to Yellowknife via San Francisco and Calgary. Feb 5, 2013 I returned via Edmonton and Seattle. All photographs were taken with a Nikon D90 digital single lens reflex camera. I mostly used a Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED VR DX AF-S Nikkor. For night shots I used a Sigma 24mm f2.8 Super Wide II. I used a Lowepro TLZ 55 AW case and chemical handwarmer heat packs. I often used a Promaster SystemPRO T525P Carbon Fiber Tripod with Manfrotto 054 Magnesium Ball Head with Q2 Quick Release.
In the night scenes I did some software tinkering to subtract out scattered city light. This has its limitations.
Fahrenheit temperatures were mostly in the minus thirties, later warming to the minus twenties.
Clicking on the 500 pixel photos will bring up a version that is 2000 pixels long.

Lois Lane in Yellowknife really is named after the Superman character.
Yellowknife native Margot Kidder played Lois Lane to Christopher Reeve's Superman
in 1978, 1980, 1983, and 1987.

In this kind of mixed light the white balance and dynamic range of the eye is very different from the camera.

Aurora from Tin Can Hill. As I headed out the hotel and down 52nd Street there was a gorgeous display.
By the time I got up the hill and set up my camera thin clouds were moving in, scattering ugly,
reddish city light as seen by the camera. The clouds quickly got worse.

Inside the Pedestrian and ski-doo tunnel under Old Airport Road from Frame Lake.
It is probably as cold inside as outside, but humidity is higher. I am holding my
breath to avoid blowing a cloud of steam in front of my face. Although hypothetically
that might make an interesting picture, I think the slow shutter speed would have just made
it look like fog.

Yes, I did have to keep my ears open for traffic when taking the picture inside the tunnel.
